The Barwon Heads Road Upgrade project duplicates the existing road, enhances intersections along the corridor and removes a level crossing through a new road bridge. Additionally, walking and cycling connections are improved with new shared user paths and signalised intersections.

The works included road duplication, intersection upgrades, new SUP, street lighting, utilities, drainage, landscaping and bridge widening. Environmental aspects included a site close to environmentally sensitive areas with EPBC-listed fish species and an EPBC referral with stringent conditions. The site is also close to RAMSAR wetlands.
